AISS Held Lecture Session on the European Union's Role in Supporting Afghan Peace Process


On April 18, 2019, the Afghan Institute for Strategic Studies (AISS) hosted H.E. Ambassador Pierre Mayaudon for a lecture session on “The European Union's Role in Supporting Afghan Peace Process”. Distinguished current and former Afghan Government Officials, academics, military experts, civil society members and media representatives, ambassadors and diplomats participate in the event. The purpose of this programme was review of the EU’s role in establishing a long-lasting peace in Afghanistan.
In his speech, Mr. Mayaudon noted European Union’s direct contribution to Afghanistan, as EU’s first largest destination of diplomatic support. Mr. Mayaudon restated EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Federica Mogherini’s five point remarks at Geneva Conference on November 28th 2018. He emphasized on an inclusive peace process with special attention to youth and women. He also added that there has been significant meetings between U.S. Government and Taliban, as well as, Afghan politicians including the Moscow Conference. However, he iterated, that according to EU, “it is not a peace process” until it is a direct talk with the Afghan people and the government.
The event was concluded with a Q&A session and an appreciation of Mr. Pierre Mayaudon by AISS Director General.
