Celebrating the Pearl of Khorasan
The Night of Herat co-hosted by the SOAS South Asia Institute, Sussex Asia Centre and Afghan Institute for Strategic Studies on March 17, 2019 in London, UK. The program was opened with a Sufi Prayer followed by remarks from Professor Edward Simpson, Director of SOAS South Asia Institute and Professor Magnus Marsden, Director of Sussex Asia Center at University of Sussex.
In the first part of the program, Charlie Gamme, Historian and author of the book ‘The Pearl of Khorasan’ provided insights from his book into the rich history of Herat as one of the significant trading and cultural entrepôts of Eurasia.
On the history of Herat, Professor Michael Barry of Princeton University and the American University of Afghanistan, gave a lecture on the Court of Timurid and famous miniatures by Herati Painter, Behzad.
The program was filled with love by a performance from Professor John Baily and Veronica Doubleday of Gold Smiths Music. Professor Baily and Doubleday performed emotional melodies about traveling, love and fate from KHorasan to London.
The program was concluded by a video presentation on Jews of Herat, Herati Cuisine and Persian Poetry.
