AISS’ New Year Begins with a New Board


As the new year begins, the Afghan Institute for Strategic Studies (AISS) has introduced its new advisory board. This board includes prominent figures from politics, diplomacy, academia, and research; who bring extensive expertise in international affairs, human rights, and national security. Under the guidance of this distinguished group, AISS aims to advance its strategic vision and initiatives.

The new board members include Dr. Rangin Dadfar Spanta, former National Security Advisor and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Afghanistan, who has teaching experience in political science in Germany and active participation in democratic coalitions; Dr. Nazif Shahrani, a prominent anthropologist and Central Asian studies expert, with teaching experience at Indiana University, Harvard, and Stanford; Dr. Shahrbanoo Tajbakhsh, a researcher and professor at Sciences Po Paris, specializing in human security and violent extremism; Ambassador Amar Sinha, a seasoned Indian diplomat with successful missions in Afghanistan, Tajikistan, and other countries; Ambassador Sayed Tayeb Jawad, a senior Afghan diplomat and former ambassador of the country in the United States, the United Kingdom, and Russia.

Dr. Jennifer Brick Murtazashvili, a professor at the University of Pittsburgh and a notable researcher at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, with multiple academic accolades; Annie Pforzheimer, a retired U.S. diplomat with a robust background in human rights and national security, and a former senior official at the U.S. State Department; Nader Nadery, a human rights advocate and seasoned researcher with over two decades of experience in civil society and peace negotiations; David Sedney, former president of the American University of Afghanistan and senior fellow at the Center for Strategic and International Studies.

In the coming year, AISS is committed to pursuing initiatives aimed at research and enhancing strategic analysis. These initiatives will focus on scientific studies in peacebuilding, regional security, countering extremism, and human rights. The AISS’ activities will include organizing conferences and dialogues to foster strategic discussions among regional countries and the international community. Alongside its research efforts, AISS will continue publishing, producing, and translating specialized books to promote public and scholarly understanding in the field of strategic studies.

Under the leadership of the new board, AISS envisions an active role on both regional and global stages. The AISS aspires to make a meaningful contribution to regional and global security by emphasizing practical research, fostering academic collaboration, and facilitating constructive dialogues.
