Webinar Discussion on China-Taliban Relations: Can It be Sustained?
On February 7, 2024 the Afghan Institute for Strategic Studies (AISS) hosted a webinar panel discussion titled "China-Taliban Relations: Can It be Sustained?". The panel included Dr. Veena Ramachandran and Mr. Amit Kumar from Birla Institute of Technology and Science in Rajasthan - India, Tamim Asey from King's College in London - United Kingdom, and Raffaello Pantucci from S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies in Singapore. Sadiq Amini from Observer Research Foundation America (ORF America) moderated the discussion. The panel explored the historical context and evolution of China-Taliban relations, analyzed motivations behind China's engagement, assessed implications for regional security and economic interests, and discussed challenges and opportunities in China's overall approach towards Afghanistan. This dialogue facilitated a deeper understanding of the evolving regional geopolitics since August 15, 2021 that has led to a competitive and fear driven engagement by regional and global stakeholders with the Taliban.
