Sport & Politics: Solidarity, Accountability

This webinar will address the controversial role of Afghanistan’s cricket team, a team whose connections to the Taliban regime, especially in a context where the people of Afghanistan are under the control of an oppressive regime that enforces gender apartheid, cannot be ignored. The team’s presence and its relations with the Taliban regime, which directly contribute to legitimizing this repressive regime, not only raise important questions about the intersection of sports and politics but also pose the risk of strengthening a regime that threatens fundamental human rights.
The question arises: can sports remain neutral when there is a danger of becoming a tool for legitimizing oppressive regimes? What responsibility do international bodies and athletes have to prevent complicity and ensure accountability? This discussion will address these issues and analyze how the global community can respond to this dilemma by standing in solidarity with the oppressed and preserving ethical integrity on the global stage.
