Rumi's Night

Rumi Night: “Rumi’s Message for Our Time: Love, Freedom, and Human Harmony”

Celebrating the Legacy of Jalaluddin Muhammad Rumi on the Occasion of His Birthday Anniversary

Background

The Night of Rumi is envisioned as a distinguished cultural and intellectual gathering to commemorate the birth anniversary of the renowned Persian poet, mystic, and philosopher Jalaluddin Muhammad Rumi, born in Balkh, present-day Afghanistan, on 30 September 1207. Widely regarded as one of humanity’s most enduring voices of compassion, tolerance, and spiritual unity, Rumi’s teachings continue to inspire millions across cultures, religions, and generations. The first edition was held on September 29, 2025, which was supported by a number of Federal and community organizations.

Held alongside the academic conference on “Religious Freedom,” the program seeks to provide a cultural and humanistic dimension to the broader dialogue on coexistence, pluralism, dignity, and mutual respect among peoples and faith traditions. Through poetry, music, scholarship, and intercultural engagement, the event aims to highlight the timeless relevance of Rumi’s message of universal love, peace, harmony, and the unity of humankind. The 2026 edition of the event also coincides with the 250th anniversary of the independence of the United States, providing an opportunity to reflect on the values of freedom, diversity, and peaceful coexistence that continue to shape democratic societies and intercultural dialogue. The program will be hosted at the iconic Museum of the Bible in Washington, D.C., bringing together representatives of diverse faith communities, academia, civil society organizations, diplomats, cultural personalities, artists, and members of the wider public.
